The competition proposal for the nursing school at Evangelisches Waldkrankenhaus Spandau arranges learning and social spaces around a central courtyard. Drawing on the cloister, the courtyard becomes the school’s spatial heart and a shared point of reference within the compact building. Wide glazed corridors face the courtyard and connect the different uses via short routes. Views across the building make it easy to navigate and encourage interaction between its different areas. The inward-facing circulation spaces bring together daylight, places to pause and the practical demands of everyday school life. The role at Thoma Architekten included project management and the design concept; the proposal received first prize.
