The thesis examines social housing as a potential instrument of urban regeneration. It draws on a systematic analysis of some sixty years of European experience, applying the findings to the Italian context. The case studies are considered alongside the circumstances of a medium-sized city in Calabria. The design component develops a range of urban intervention strategies, taking one through to developed design. The resulting proposal combines new construction and renovation within an existing urban fabric shaped by complex spatial, physical and social conditions.
