At Venice’s Arsenale, offices and laboratories are inserted as independent volumes within historic halls. The box-in-box approach preserves the envelope of the former shipbuilding spaces, keeping the new structures separate from the existing walls. The proportions of the historic interiors guide the arrangement of the insertions. The new volumes stand parallel to one another, with laboratories on the ground floor and offices and meeting rooms above. Reopened historic arches connect the halls along their longitudinal axis, establishing a continuous circulation route. The contribution during an internship at Studio Cecchetto & Associati covered design development at the Italian Progetto definitivo stage.
